Boutique company based in Tokyo providing music services in and out of Japan.
In 2020, Funkindustry discovered their unexpected popularity in Japan through social media.
It all began with a simple email... from a Japanese dance teacher requesting permission to use their music. Intrigued, the band delved deeper and found that their track "Do It" was being used by Locking dancers for the final round of a major Japanese TV dance competition (Japan Dance Delight). They also uncovered a fanbase across Japan, Taiwan, and Korea, with a network of dancers and enthusiasts performing to their music.
In 2021, Funkindustry released their debut album, including the single "Gimme All You Got," for which they invited Japanese locking dance crews to submit their choreographies. The album also featured their first collaboration with Jua, a rapper of Japanese, French, and Cameroonian descent, on the track and music video for "Suddenly." This song gained significant traction, making its way into seven Japanese playlists, including Spotify Japan's Tokyo Rising and Apple Music Japan's R&B New Releases.
In 2022, the band continued their collaborations with Japanese artists, releasing a remix EP featuring producers Orland, miida and The Department, followed by the single "Another One" featuring hip-hop artist Wez Atlas. The single has since garnered over 130,000 Spotify plays, primarily in Japan and Asia, and was highlighted by Amazon Music Japan in their Breakthrough Artists 2023 list.
Funkindustry's members, who have long been immersed in manga culture, were naturally drawn to City Pop, leading them to create an EP paying homage to the genre. In June 2023, they released "Midnight City Lovers", featuring five duets with prominent Japanese female vocalists, including Asako Toki, Natsu Summer, chihiRo from JiLL-Decoy association, Eri Takenaka, and Emi (Emiland/ex-Zukunashi). The EP cover was designed by renowned Japanese artist Hiroshi Nagai. The lead single, "Loneliness" featuring Natsu Summer, had its music video shot in both Paris and Tokyo.
After producing the album remotely, Funkindustry finally had the opportunity to meet their Japanese collaborators in person when they embarked on a tour across Japan, with performances in Osaka, Tokyo, Kyoto, Nagoya, and Okayama. In tandem with the tour, Kissing Fish Records, a sub-label of Disk Union, released a special 7-inch vinyl featuring the tracks "I Want You Closer" with Asako Toki and "Loneliness" with Natsu Summer.
In 2024, their journey was documented in “Funkindustry – Discovering Japanese City Pop”, which aired on French public television network France 3 in June. In July, the band released the single "Etretat," a French cover of Ryusenkei & Hitomitoi's "Kanashiikurai Diamond," in collaboration with French artist Clair, followed by another release, "Free Your Heart," featuring Korean City Pop artist uju. September saw the release of "Moonlight Serenade," a duet with Japanese singer and actress Rie Yoshizawa.
Funkindustry is now expanding into other Asian markets with a tour starting in Indonesia in late September, followed by shows in Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Taiwan, the band’s second-largest streaming market after Japan, holds special significance as they prepare for their first performance at the Rock in Taichung festival. In celebration of this milestone, Funkindustry collaborated with Taiwanese artist Ahh G on the funky new single "Misty Lady," set to release on October 18.
The A&R/executive production of the EP/singles as well as the booking of both tours in Japan were handled by Nouvelle Collection GK.
